Obama Call to Community Service -- Thailand Event on 18 January

Friends and Fellow Democrats,

“Focusing your life solely on making a buck shows a certain poverty of ambition. It asks too little of yourself. Because it's only when you hitch your wagon to something larger than yourself that you realize your true potential.”—Barack Obama

As you may know, President-elect Obama has requested that part of the Inauguration celebrations include a community service activity to coincide with Martin Luther King’s Day. The global Democrats Abroad has taken up this call, and DAT is committed to doing our part!

To support these efforts DAT is collecting donations for some of Thailand’s most vulnerable citizens—the orphans housed at Pakkret Babies’ Home in Nonthaburi. Donations will be collected this week at several locations throughout Bangkok and Nichada Thani and then delivered on Sunday 18 January.

To make this a successful event, we will need volunteers. Most importantly we will need people who are willing to use their homes or businesses as drop off points for donations.

Of course we will also need people to make donations. Items only, no cash please! Pakkret Babies’ Home has specifically requested the following items:

1. Dumex brand infant formula 1 & 2
2. Small and medium sized disposable diapers
3. White rice

People who are interested in coming with DAT to the orphanage to deliver the donations are more than welcome as well. The trip is highly recommended; it could be the most heart-warming experience you have in the New Year. We will be leaving from Mor Chit BTS station on Sunday 18 January at 9:00 AM, returning to Mor Chit around 4 PM. Volunteer drivers are welcome as passenger space is currently very limited.

Volunteers, please contact Brian Thomson at Thomson.bk@gmail.com or call him at 089-927-1986.
